Kyrgyz Embroidered Saima

Saima is the style of embroidery used in the Kyrgyz nomad tradition. When pastoralism was still a common way of life, young brides would spend months preparing large tapestries – called Tush-kiyiz – as a wedding gift to be hung in the tents of their new family. Our collection includes both antique and more recent Tush-kiyiz that have been restored by Kyrgyz craftswomen and refashioned as new objects.
